'Aqeeq' (العقيق) means quartz in Arabic. Quartz is a crystalline mineral compound composed of silicon dioxide. It is considered a semi-precious gem stone, and well known types of Aqeeq include carnelian, agate and onyx stones. These are also referred to as Abyssinian stones.

It can be considered a sunnah to wear a silver ring on the small finger. The Prophet (ﷺ) was described as wearing a ring that had an Abyssinian stone which he would turn inward facing the palm. It had an inscription on it and he would use it to seal letters sent to neighboring rulers. He would wear it on either the right or left or not at all.

The signet-ring of the Prophet (ﷺ) was of silver with an Abyssinian stone - Sunan Abi Dawud 4216
